Dyslexia Friendly School

Dyslexia Friendly School

At Moira Primary School, we have introduced innovative strategies, resources and techniques to help better support our children experiencing specific difficulties with Literacy. In addition, we also recognised that many of these practices proved helpful to many others. As a result, our approaches have become embedded into general classroom teaching as examples of ‘best practice’ reflecting the standards required of a ‘Dyslexia Friendly School’.

Following the rigorous scrutiny of the extensive documentation we have collated over recent years, outlining how we identify and assess our children’s needs, staff training, intervention programmes, school resources and classroom strategies, our school was inspected by assessors from London working on behalf of the British Dyslexia Association. The assessors observed lessons, intervention programmes and met with pupils, parents, staff and governors.

We are delighted to have received the highly prestigious ‘Dyslexia Friendly School’ award, with the provision within our school described as ‘exemplary’. Being one of only 6 primary schools in Northern Ireland to be awarded ‘Dyslexia Friendly School’ status we feel we have achieved a milestone in our commitment to providing opportunities for learning without limits and reinforcing our focus on inclusivity for all. Our accolade aligns with our school’s vision to help all children ‘become successful learners, confident individuals, effective contributors and responsible citizens’.
