PE INSPECTION - MARCH 2022
Following an inspection of PE provision within our school on Thursday 31st March 2022, Moira Primary School came out with ‘FLYING COLOURS’ (the inspector’s own words).
We are delighted with the outcome and below you will find the inspector’s comments on each of the seven areas of PE inspected.
Vision, including strategic planning
- Senior and middle leadership recognises and values the purpose and potential of PE and sport within the school.
- A skilled, experienced and driven PE co-ordinator (Mr Gray) is in place.
- The co-ordinator completes a regular whole school staff audit in PE to identify strengths and barriers.
- PE is included as a priority within the School Development Plan.
Planning to ensure breadth and balance
- There are relevant and detailed schemes of work and planning in place for all core areas.
- Equipment used during the lessons observed ensured a development of skills, challenge and progression within the lesson.
Learning experiences that ensure minimal statutory requirement
- PE activities are adapted and modified to ensure children with additional learning needs are fully included and able to make progress.
- Children have had regular access to a significant number of extra-curricular activities, both competitive and non-competitive, which are predominantly overseen by the teaching staff.
Assessment and progression in skills
- The PE units of work are evaluated in detail by teachers to ensure individual children’s strengths and areas for improvement are identified and discussed for future planning. These discussions are again included at transition stages.
- Teachers were observed building on the children’s prior learning when planning and delivering lessons.
- Teachers and children were observed monitoring and assessing very effectively throughout the lessons and corrected or modified the activities to ensure a progression in learning.
Teacher skills, qualifications, professional development and confidence in delivery of the PE curriculum
- The staff are confident in the planning and delivery of PE and deliver all of the lessons in PE.
- The PE co-ordinator actively researches and identifies methods to improve the quality of PE within the school.
- The PE co-ordinator has provided additional training and support to staff, including the production of specific units of work to ensure consistency, progression and accuracy of practice.
- Staff have gained skills and experience from team teaching alongside specialist coaches and are now utilising these skills during the teaching of games.
Resources and accommodation
- The large multi-purpose hall provides an excellent resource for the delivery of PE.
- The school also has access to two playgrounds and a grassy area for PE and extra-curricular activities.
- The children have access to an excellent outdoor learning environment and utilise this fully to remain active during break and lunch times.
- The school accesses Moira Demesne to provide further experiences in active outdoor learning.
- There is an excellent range of PE equipment and resources.
Community links and external partners
- Opportunities to engage in physical and well-being activities and achievements, both inside and outside of school, are regularly and consistently highlighted and celebrated within the school’s weekly newsletter.
