At Moira Primary School, we celebrated ‘Safer Internet Day 2025' with the theme 'Too good to be true? Protecting yourself and others from scams online.'
During Safer Internet Week we assessed the real scale of this issue and facilitate children with opportunities to share their experiences and ideas on how to tackle the problem. We’ll build on the important work being done to raise awareness of issues such as online financial extortion and we’ll also consider the future of scams, answering questions such as:
• How is changing technology like generative AI going to impact the approach of scammers?
• What role can the government and internet industry take to tackle this threat?
• What changes would young people like to see to help protect themselves moving forward?
Each class completed activities as shown below:
Primary 1 | Trusted Adults P1 read a story about Buddy the internet safety dog. We discussed how to stay safe online. Buddy taught us a song to help us remember to always ask an adult for help.
|
Primary 2 | The Big Picture Primary 2 used a visual, ‘big picture’ to tell a story. We discussed what an online ad was and how to spot one. We identified trusted adults and the importance of asking for help when we are unsure about something.
|
Primary 3 | How would it feel? Primary 3 listened to a story about Samira. Throughout the story the children had to show a particular emotion card that described how they would feel if…..for example, they were tricked online. They also had fun answering the P3 Safer Internet day quiz, using an x o board. |
Primary 4 | Personal Information Card Games Primary 4 used visual cues and words to describe personal information. We identified what personal information is and know to keep it private to help protect us from scams online. |
Primary 5 | Let’s go Phishing P5 learnt what the term ‘phishing’ is. After an informative discussion, the children had to sort various scenarios into trustworthy or phishing. They then explained why they thought certain scenarios were phishing and the things to look out for, to help them keep safe online. |
Primary 6 | Protect your Profile Primary 6 learnt the importance of protecting their profile to help protect them from online scams. They learnt how to make their profile private and not to make their personal information visible to others. They understand that their passwords must be secure and not secured with others. |
Primary 7 | Signs of a Scam Primary 7 looked at different scenarios to see if they could identify which were scams and which weren’t. They had to identify what part of the scenario was the issue. They worked on identifying if it; sounds too good to be true, was a contact they did not expect, asked for personal information, money or trade was being asked for or not a scam. |

On Tuesday 7th February 2023, Safer Internet Day was celebrated globally to promote the safe and positive use of digital technology for children and young people, and to inspire a national conversation about using technology responsibly, respectfully, critically, and creatively. Each teachers led their classes through lessons and activities that reminded our children how to use the internet positively and gave them strategies to help them remain safe online.
P1 - Primary 1 pupils completed an activity to decide what the difference was between 'good' things and 'not good' things on the internet and discussed the importance of telling an adult if they come across something 'not good' on the internet.
P2 - Primary 2 pupils came up with the slogan 'Turn it off! Tell an adult!' and used this as part of their poster competition by drawing the many adults that they can talk to who can help them stay safe online.
P3 - Primary 3 pupils read and discussed Childnet's Internet Safety story 'Hanni and the Magic Window' on the interactive panels in their classroom.
P4 - Primary 4 completed an 'Ask a friend' safer internet questionnaire with their classmates to find out how the internet is used throughout P4 which allowed for effective discussion on how to use it safely and wisely.
P5 - Primary 5 Completed an Internet safety crossword to locate all the different vocabulary we often use and hear when using the internet safely.
P6 & P7 - 'Love for Life' came into our school community on Tuesday to host their iSmart workshop with our P6 and P7 pupils. This interactive presentation allowed our upper key stage two pupils to think about the digital world and how to make smart and safe choices online. The pupils were encouraged to use and develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills to navigate tricky situations that they may come across online. They reflected on how digital platforms affect the rest of the world and the pupils thought about how they can make this impact a positive one on their lives.
Please take the opportunity to discuss the use of the internet with your children. Whilst it is a wonderful resource, it also has dangers and children should be aware of how to keep safe when online.
